The Torment of Others by Val McDermid

This is the first book I've read by this author, and I loved it! Edge of the seat storyline, kept me interested from beginning to end. This may be the first book of hers that I've read, but it sure won't be the last.

Dolores and Victor meet on the train from London to Oxford and fall instantly in love. She is a feminist writer and lecturer, he is a successful business man. They both have so much pain in their lives, and in spite of their different points of view their love affair lasts for the whole year that they are in England. Enthralling, loved it.

The Ice Age by Margaret Drabble

Interesting tale of Anthony Keating, a middle aged property developer. He suffers a heart attack which chnges his life in a very unique way. Excellent book.

The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold

A debut book. Murder victim Susie Salmon speaks to us from Heaven, as she watches the backlash of her death on her devestated family. Extremely unusual storyline, but somehow quite gripping.

The DaVinci Code by Dan Brown

A wonderful mystery full of puzzles and enigmas. Sorting through all the riddles are Professor Robert Langdon and Sophie Neveu in the fascinating book. Certainly makes you think!

Her Mother's Daughter by Marilyn French

Stacey Stevens is the nom de plume of Anastasia Dabrowski, of Polish immigrant stock. She is a world-famed photographer. Now nearly 50 years old, she looks back to the lives of her mother and grandmother and recounts the terrible sacrifices they made which seem unbelievable to us now.

A wonderful book, well worth reading over and over.

Riddley Walker by Russell Hoban

Set in the remote future this book is written in a strange neo English dialogue. This fascinating book is a picture of how life could be after the end of the world. I love the way he mixes old religious, political and farming references with strange computer language. Stunning book.

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Attwood

The Handmaid Offred, treasured only for her working ovaries, her mission in life - to breed.

She's no ordinary Handmaid in this tale of life in the future, she thinks too much, especially about her previous life with her husband and child. This scathing satire is a masterpiece.
